SXSW 2014 Spreadsheet 2
Expect a busy week at OEB as most of the back-work is set and ready to go. Today kicks off with a lighter set highlighted by a diverse mix of rock acts and our first “9”:
The Blank Tapes (9) - To find middle ground between breezy pop and alarming, NYC rock and roll is quite a feat, a trend that carries on throughout Vacation.
Boyfrndz (6) – From the twiddling guitar line that builds up “All Get Out”, the opener on Boyfrndz latest EP Natures, it’s pretty obvious this local Austin power trio isn’t about to hold anything back. These songs beam with energy, driven by stellar drum fills and backbeats, a cool spin on this kind of sound.
Capsula (6) – One of the few four-years-running acts getting the SXSW OEB treatment this round, Capsula is bilingual rock and roll band that draws equally from trash-bottom punk and arena opuses.
Allysen Callery (5) – Callery is a New England folk singer very much in the vein of Nick Drake. Her minimal, acoustic catalog is based around gentle fingerpicking and Callery’s haunting vocal delivery.
