Abigail Lapell’s last record Getaway is a minimalist country effort that hits right for the heart, taking traditional Americana melodies and adding a spacious, vulnerable air to let every note resinate with forlorn emotionality. Notes of Neil, Emmylou, and Lucinda weave their way throughout Lapell’s music, a sign of an artist studied in the past while she adds her own tales to the alt-country canon. Her second full-length, Getaway shares mature songwriting alongside spare, but interesting instrumentation throughout, often escaping pure acoustic tones to bring in ghostly sounds of slide guitars and pacing percussion.
