Another Sky - “The Pain”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Alt-J, Frightened Rabbit, The 1975

Grooving indie rock band Another Sky have their sophomore record Beach Day lined up for next month and it has already been previewed with four singles that feel arena-ready from note one. Funk and R&B influences ride strong on these early tracks, combining rhythmic and melodic measures in times both melancholic and upbeat. Compared to their earlier releases when previewing Another Sky last for SXSW, Beach Day feels more purposeful and relatively tight. While residing in a moody, alt-rock base, there are twists of spotlight-level brightness that thankfully explode across these early tracks and what should be a well-rounded 2024 record come March. 2019 Review: A dense, bubbling take on indie rock, Another Sky sets a deep mood in their music, but they twist and build to epic moments across their 2018 debut EP Forget Yourself and follow-up singles “Avalanche” and “Chillers”. Another Sky craft their songs in unexpected ways, using percussion to set a tribal vibe, nicely accommodated by darkness-tinged melodies that enter and exit songs like dance track riffs. The emerging UK band’s guitars and vocals both  display sonic range and varied textures, painting creatively while still keeping musical intensity at the dynamic center of their music.
