It was a matter of time. With a throwback rap style, uber-catchy beats, and tight songwriting, Armani White’s career has been leading to a breakout hit and “BILLIE EILISH.” is that moment. Sampling the “Nothin’” beat from N.O.R.E., Armani takes a minute-and-a-half and turns it into gold, finding a perfect space for his sharp, fun vocal techniques. In the Tik Tok era, the Philadelphia rapper has recognized the appeal of efficiency, making sure every note has a purpose and bailing before things drag on. “DIAMOND DALLAS.” follows that same pattern, bright and catchy melodies pairing well with Armani’s clever songwriting. Newly signed to Def Jam, expect a spotlight release sometime in 2023, but in the meantime there’s a wealth of early material to explore including his 2019 debut Keep In Touch. Listening through Armani White’s discography chronologically clearly shows a progression of growth, so look for SXSW to be a continued breakout for an artist that bridges hip hop’s past and present with an easy, relatable touch.
