Fifteen years ago and following two buzzy records, be your own PET called it quits. While members found solo success and fronting bands like Turbo Fruits and Public Access TV, last year called be your own PET back up to the plate to open a couple Jack White gigs and that momentum has continued into a stop at SXSW in 2023. While new music hasn’t been released, a throwback to their self-titled record and follow-up Get Awkward should make for a rambunctious, pop rock set buoyed by the band’s catchy hooks and unexpected melodies. Vocalist Jemina Pearl is a force, delivering her verses and choruses with bursting energy and classic rock and roll energy. More tight than free, be your own PET’s songwriting is based on past-masters’ roadmaps, but they add personal, weird touches lyrically and melodically that make the band’s music sound even more immediate.
