Bleach Lab - “Nothing Left To Lose”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Sunflower Bean, Alvvays, NewDad

Bleach Lab find that space between alt-rock and dreamy pop that can be simultaneously hypnotic and catchy, a strong collection throughout their debut full-length Lost In A Rush Of Emptiness. While nonchalant, the structures underneath Bleach Lab’s bubbling sound are pure power-pop, but the London-based band instead work around mid-tempo, new-wave riffs. The end result is comfortable and even a little nostalgic, but with some indie-rock, kick-drum bounce to move things along. That said, this is a quiet record overall, softening the edges both rhythmically and melodically while not just being a set of tender ballads. Inferred shoegaze vibes are there but turned down and even the sharpest hooks are more guided by a held hand than beaten over with a hammer. Pretty without being sugary, it’s a really nice debut and a good headphone listen to catch their detailed touch. (Kevin McStravick)
