Bonny Doon - “Crooked Creek”
SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5
Pairs Well With…Panda Bear, The Lathums, Kurt Vile
Breezy indie pop and melancholy rock criss-cross in Bonny Doon’s sound, taking those nonchalant influences and building tight epics slightly clouded by DIY rock and pop turns. That aspect gives Bonny Dune a semblance of charm, weaving songwriting that is more sweet than sorrow. While that pop influence is a standout on “Crooked Creek” and “San Francisco”, their two most-recent singles since signing with respected label Anti-, Bonny Doons’ sound is completely grounded as it pulls from rooted, Americana guidelines. Fun fact: Bonny Doon’s last ‘record’ was a favorite for many including myself these past few years, playing as Waxahatchee’s country/folk band on her recent breakout Saint Cloud. Bonny Doon showcases Friday night at Lucille, part of a stacked lineup for Gold-Diggers and Aquarium Drunkard that also includes Fruit Bats and The Golden Dregs. (Kevin McStravick)
