Cartel Madras - “LAVENDER NIGHTZ” (w/ Tyris White)

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Little Simz, Sylvan Esso, Megan Thee Stallion

Coming from Calgary, Canada, Cartel Madras put one leg in UK grime and another in deep, danceable trap on their debut full-length The Serpent & The Tiger. Quick-spitted raps, drill rhythms, and eclectic pop hooks define Cartel Mardras’ music, the duo balancing fun and experimental with bouncy ease. Lyrically dense verses and sweetened pop choruses hopscotch in their unique, intoxicating songs played over house and R&B rhythms, thickened dance beats both nostalgic and future-facing. Other tracks try on chillwave, synth vibes - Cartel Madras’ music is surprisingly complex on close listen especially given their groove-based approach. Old school and modern hip hop influences cross as well with Cartel Madras, churning it all into upbeat party music. Above all, Cartel Madras’ sound is incredibly confident and fun, traits that should lead to a raucous and impressive SXSW set next month. Cartel Madras showcases Thursday night at Lucille as part of a stacked lineup presented by Range Magazine including fellow Canadian rap explores Haviah Mighty and Snotty Nose Rez Kids.
