Carver Commodore - “Good Idea”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Spoon, The Strokes, Cage the Elephant

Carver Commodore follows in the tradition of harder 00s indie rock, a band focused on riffs and energy without going over the top. Hailing from Alabama, there are Southern rock influences here as well, bluesy at times while still staying within the frame of tight, three-minute pop songs. They’ve been at it for a bit too, releasing two full-lengths since 2017 and most recently sharing the EP Too Much?, a collection of songs that are among the catchiest in Carver Commodore’s catalog. Their best quality is the diversity within a genre that is mostly to-the-point, exploring heavy metal (“Something Okay?”), alt country (“Devil May Care”), and jangly rock (“They Don’t Know”) all within the same EP while still keeping true to their core sound.
