While based in classic country forms, Charlotte Cornfield’s music draws as much from bedroom pop emotionality as traditional Americana, finding a nice balance between the past and present throughout 2021 full-length Highs in the Minuses. The Canadian singer-songwriter’s fourth record, the maturity of Cornfield’s songwriting stands out immediately, both in the way she sings subtly from the heart and in her reflective, contemporary lyricism. While country instrumentation handle a bulk of Highs in the Minuses, there are electric moments influenced by grunge and indie rock that deepen and diversify the record beyond a revivalist lens.
