Chiiild’s take on R&B is one of space, a minimalist artist that absorbs the groove of a song in a bass line or subtle percussion, but otherwise allows melodies to play across an open atmosphere. The Canadian artist carries heavy weight on light air, taking influence from hip hop and pop music, but applying it with a delicate touch. Chiiild’s third record Better Luck in the Next Life is due this March and is previewed by the grooving send-off “Bon Voyage” and latest track “Good For Now”. A collaboration with Lucky Daye, “Good For Now” lays into a mid-tempo alt-rock rhythm, but treats it so softly that it sounds like the reflection of a distant dream. It’s impressive how comfortable Chiiild sounds here, effortlessly weaving pop songs hidden under an indie R&B haze. (Kevin McStravick)
