Last year it was one song that showed the potential of corook’s songwriting with “sims”, but leading into SXSW 2023 it is clear that corook is an artist with a high batting average of affecting singles. The Nashville-based performer released her debut EP achoo! in 2022, a collection of clever tracks that pull from hip hop, electro pop, and alt rock, all while keep catchy hooks in mind. Corook’s lyrics are personal, self-aware, and often bitingly funny, not as a defense layer, but rather to poke at the layers of what makes corook who she is. Since achoo!, corook has continued to grow her sound with a string of singles including the gorgeous “realistic”, a song that shows off the multi-faceted approach of this on-the-rise artist. 2022 Review: Nashville artist corook’s debut single “sims” is a bouncy and eclectic pop introduction, a single struggling with technology and reality, softening the lines between what’s controlled and the fragility of real life. A combination of bright synth pop and pop-rock hooks, corook maintains balance throughout “sims” that plays nicely against the paranoia and frustration playing out lyrically. It’s a tight three minutes of upbeat melodies and shows the Nashville-based artist’s grip on accessible, but indie-minded songwriting.
