Dutch Criminal Record - “C’est La Vie”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Kiwi Jr., Vampire Weekend, Glass Animals

Crossing power pop with dreamy indie rock, Dutch Criminal Record achieve a central sound both warm and instantly catchy. The English band has been at it for just about a decade, five EPs under their belt prior to recent singles “C’est La Vie” and “Light Up”. With so many different threads to grab onto when it comes to new music, it’s refreshing to hear what just is a great rock and roll band while checking out Dutch Criminal Record. That’s not to say they sticks to just one formula - check the speak-sing, post-punk builder “It’s Gonna Be Okay”, the new-wave moodiness of “Light Up”, or the reggae-tinged bounce of “Feel Good” to hear them break away from their ripe, power-pop core. Listening through Dutch Criminal Record’s catalog, it’s also notable the maturity in their songwriting, often sharing songs that feel like they’ve been around for years even on first listen. Dutch Criminal Record opens up an exciting showcase at Sellers for Alcopop! Friday night that also features recommended artists Cheekface and Prima Queen. (Kevin McStravick)
