Haviah Mighty followed up her Polaris-award-winning record 13th Floor in 2021 with Stock Exchange, an expectedly exploratory album the Canadian artist describes as a “bunch of dope singles” versus any single message. Grime, reggaeton, and indie rap influences each take the center on Stock Exchange, anchored by the artist herself, offering lyrically dense verses with insular energy. While mostly low key, there are threads of intensity in Haviah Mighty’s songwriting and percussive rap style that make Stock Exchange subtly burst, highlighted on dreamy yet hopeful “Tesla”. 2020 Review: Rapper Haviah Mighty’s 2019 record 13th Floor is a subtle explosion of creativity, both in the Canadian artist’s internalized or energized rhymes and grooved beats. Formally a member of collective The Sorority, Haviah Mighty’s solo debut full-length is an expression of her musical diversity, from reggaeton anthem “Wishy Washy” to quick-spitted, grime-leaning “Smoke”. No matter the base genre, Haviah Mighty’s music is consistently robust and psychedelic, born in dance, jazz, and R&B spaces, thick and booming when necessary and otherwise held back with notable control.
