Housewife - “King of Wands”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Alvvays, Olivia Rodrigo, The Beths

Housewife is now the solo outlet of Brighid Fry, but downsizing from a duo hasn’t minimized the catchy pop hooks that drives their sound ahead. Housewife is leaning more into accessible alt-rock since, a little heavier while still formed around power-pop songwriting that could be light and breezy under a different lens. Housewife followed up 2022 EP You’ll Be Forgiven with a pair of singles last year, “Fuck Around Phase” and “King of Wands”, two of the bigger sounding tracks in her burgeoning catalog and signposts to ubiquity if she continues down this pleasing path. 2023 Review: Housewife’s 2022 EP You’ll Be Forgiven is a sweet slice of breezy indie rock, a record that emits comfort while still maintaining some DIY crunch. The duo formally known as Moscow Apartment are in the fifth year as a band and that maturity shows on this latest release, finding easy space in between dream pop and mid-tempo rock. While constantly catchy, Housewife are never overly bright and incessant, rather they keep in a pocket that is consistent across You’ll Be Forgiven’s five tracks. It is music that is lonely while still being inviting, and any of these songs could be a lead single on a college or NPR-like station.
