Iris Jean - “Those Eyes”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, Mazzy Star

The simplest notions often impact the most, a phrase that holds true to Iris Jean’s debut single. Armed with an acoustic guitar and minimal additional accompaniment, Jean crafts a beautiful ballad crafted of memorable melodies. “Those Eyes” recalls early Coldplay in it’s choral riff, a mood that she carries over into her song’s combination of vulnerable space and slow-played catchiness. Her voice is naturally rich and just understated enough, not distant but not pure pop. There’s a build in “Those Eyes” as well, not to the point of explosion, but it’s full and grand even if just for a few seconds. It’s the only original, paired with a cover of Dido’s “Thank You” that is aided nicely by soft drones, an effect that broadens a naturally lonely sound. Unfortunately that’s all there is to go on so far, but the strength of “Those Eyes” alone is an exciting benchmark for a full set of Iris Jean music come SXSW this March. (Kevin McStravick)
