Jelani Blackman - “Unlimited”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Ghetts, Kano, Dave

Exploring minimal grime rap, Jelani Blackman stamps unique space on debut full-length Unlimited, a calm, cooled collection of consistent, understated hip hop. Blackman’s flow is borderline whispered, notably conversational and spoken in a low-bass timbre. The beats on Unlimited are a mix of classic and modern influences, repeated hooks but with bass backbeats that rumble in a slightly psychedelic direction. While fully low-key, there are some subtly tense build-ups like on highlights “Trust” and “Secrets”. While hanging in the pocket, Blackman unloads a quick-spitted verse when needed, a technician quietly constructing complex rhymes throughout the record. Unlimited works either as a a lounge-rap or headphone listen, rewarding in its sparseness and twisting hip hop expectations by consistently holding back. (Kevin McStravick)
