Kiwi Jr. - “Unspeakable Things”
SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 4
Pairs Well With…The Modern Lovers, The Lemon Twigs, The Hold Steady
“New songs in 2024” according to Kiwi Jr.’s end-of-year post, a nice spoiler to what hopefully leads to a follow-up to the top-notch, power-pop record Chopper. The Canadian band’s third and strongest release, Chopper appeals to classic rock patterns and a gritty DIY aesthetic, a balance that Kiwi Jr. has already mastered. I was able to catch Kiwi Jr. on a recent swing through SXSW and their songs pop even more live, incessantly catchy and pure in its rock-and-roll genes. Charm emits from their melodies and overall vibe, clever lyricism matching their simple, pointed songwriting in easy concert. (Kevin McStravick)
2023 Review: Chopper, Kiwi Jr.’s third full-length of crisp, modern power pop, continues to solidify the Canadian band as can’t-miss songwriters with a knack for compact melodies. They aren’t 60s revivalists however, rather a band that filters those influences into a modern, garage-pop atmosphere. Each track on Chopper is an exercise in efficiency; in lieu of traveling off the path, Kiwi Jr. just make it a better path.
