Laura Misch - “Listen to the Sky”

SXSW 2024 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7

Pairs Well With…Four Tet, The Comet Is Coming, Tom Misch

On 2023 record Sample the Sky, Laura Misch continues to do the Laura Misch thing, merging jazz saxophone and trip-hop production into a meditative blend. A vocal record with instrumental focus, Misch digs into some deep grooves on Sample the Sky, mostly minimal but not necessarily understated. Half headphone hypnotism and half lounge grooves, Misch’s music is relaxing and entrancing, explorative but around ideas of repetition. It’s a beautiful record in all, waves of harmony rather than dissonance pointing her music gently forward. (Kevin McStravick)

2019 Review: Electronic music producer, saxophonist and vocalist, Laura Misch takes minimal R&B and adds layers of creative melodies over subtle, spacious grooves. There are threads that connect Laura Misch’s sound to her brother Tom’s, but Laura is more mysterious in her approach and mostly eschews dance beats for ambience and jazz reinventions. Misch’s last full-length Playground was released in 2017 with a few singles since, including sultry builder “Lagoon”, so look for new music to highlight her anticipated SXSW set.
