The weight of Lauren Auder’s music is immediately apparent listening through her latest EP 5 Songs for the Dysphoric, a collection of dark, piano-led songs emboldened with baroque pop and post rock atmospherics. The French artist possesses a rich baritone vocal that gives her music equal density, exploring the whole of the lower scales for emotional treasure. There’s a good deal of classic pop influence in Auder’s songwriting, but instead of throwing back, she adds modern gothic air to her drama-filled sound. Generally understated, Auder does counter that sense with orchestral flourishes throughout Songs for the Dysphoric. Used in more avant-garde and psychedelic ways than straight classical accompaniment, the string section melds with electronic waves and percussion, meticulously assembled and mixed with seamless grace. It’s a beautiful and unique presentation, one that pulls you into Auder’s personal, pained storytelling across this third EP. (Kevin McStravick)
