Making Movies - “La Marcha"
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 8
Pairs Well With…Las Cafeteras, Ozomatli, Los Lobos
Traditional Cumbia and Afro-Cuban structures guide the exciting music of Making Movies, sounds that reflect the past while still having twists of progressive fusion-pop. The Kansas City based band starts with percussive folk music, but at times sound like an indie-pop or an alt-rock collective with their consistent fusion mentality. Guitars, horns, keys, and vocals all take center-stage when it come to memorable melodies, a sound that can feel hypnotic at times for how together Making Movies always sounds. Their last full-length was 2019’s ameri’kana, their third since 2014 and a collaboratively broad record alongside Ruben Blades, David Hidalgo, and Flor de Toloache. It’s the most passionate sounding album of their catalog, one that covers a ton of ground while still sound like themselves around different Latin pop forms. Check out Making Movies on Tuesday night at Speakeasy alongside a diverse lineup including recommend acts REYNA and Salt Cathedral. (Kevin McStravick)
