Mauvey - “PROVE IT!”

SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 6

Pairs Well With…Tunde Olaniran, Cautious Clay, Juice WRLD

Mauvey’s latest EP BEFORE THE ALBUM is the most committed project to straight electro-pop in the Canadian artist’s catalog, a collection that is laser-focused on hooks musically and lyrically and is the catchiest collection of songs in his growing catalog. There are some hip-hop deviations on BEFORE THE ALBUM, but those feel like connectors between his earworm choruses. The balance between emo-rap verses and dance-pop jams is a unique set of ingredients and Mauvey conducts that merger soundly. The dynamic between deep raps and straight-hooked mantras is fascinating and strongly crafted here and another reason to keep an eye on Mauvey as he carves his own musical path into the future. 2022 Review: Canadian artist Mauvey deals in laid-back hip hop grooves, but lookout for indie pop, neo-soul, and electronic R&B informing his chameleonic vocals. Last year’s The Florist is Mauvey’s debut full-length, an eclectic collection that feels like an artist finding his space across the multi-influenced collection. More catchy and pop-oriented than pure introversion, Mauvey is keen to keep balance as a big part of his sound, never overdoing it whether going for mainstream hooks or weirder, psych-rap tones like highlight “Irrational”.
