Maxo Kream - “CRIPSTIAN”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 10
Pairs Well With…Killer Mike, Big Boi, Denzel Curry
It’s an appropriate title as you can feel the personal pressure in Maxo Kream’s latest record, its heavy, reflective tone being carried by Maxo’s lyrics balanced expertly by lightly cooled, soul beats. Weight of the World has a throwback vibe, studied in 90s and 00s hip hop and confidently delivered with laid-back Atlanta instincts. It’s right in between pop-leaning rap and indie hip hop, accessible, groove-oriented, and immediately personable. Weight of the World moves between clever word-twisting and verses that could be a therapy session, always balanced, linking conversational hip hop and big-stage bangers all in one sound. Maxo Kream’s detailed songwriting makes you feel like you’re next to him as he recounts his uprising as a Houston artist, struggles leading to growth as Maxo proves his ability to be a big-name draw heading to the future.
