Irish folk-rock has such a distinct sound and track record for memorable, sing-a-long ballads, so hearing Pat Byrne’s brogue is a welcome addition to any SXSW roster. Now residing in Austin, the passionate acoustic rock/pop artist released his third album Into the Light in 2021 and it is a continuation of his consistently endearing storytelling. Pat Byrne has already followed up Into the Light with another longing single highlighting his heart-worn songwriting and “Only a Man” stands out as one of the best tracks in the troubadour’s catalog. Pat Byrne has two showcases on his SXSW dance card including Friday night at Sheraton BackYARD and Saturday at Saxon Pub. (Kevin McStravick)
2020 Review: Irish acoustic troubadour Pat Byrne released a live record in 2019, Live at Anderson Fair, a coffeeshop-vibed performance highlighting the soulful grit in Byrne’s vocal. Some blues and country tones are rooted in Pat Byrne’s folk-based sound, a pretty and affecting atmosphere even in its most minimal form. Classic Irish storytelling and emotive internal material both find places in Byrne’s songwriting, easily accessible for anyone just searching for the heart of song at SXSW.
