Ruth Lyon - “Motormouth”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…King Princess, Brittany Howard, Billie Eilish

Soul-forward indie pop with catchy infectiousness, Ruth Lyon’s debut EP Nothing’s Perfect is an impressive collection of mellowed tracks that still deliver a deep groove. The UK artist has a rich alto vocal, employed in both a whisper and a belt across these five introductory tracks. Part R&B and part percussive rock, Ruth Lyon’s music both bounces and grooves, built on classic soul foundations, but formed with modern pop flair. Instead of just going big, Lyon swings along with her bopping, bass-driven accompaniment and the music is better for it, cohesive and thoughtfully crafted. “Lemon Tree” is a comfortable twee-rock hugger, “Little Blue” a building R&B ballad, and “Fast Food” pulling retro 60s pop vibes - there’s diversity across Nothing’s Perfect that tags Ruth Lyon as an artist to watch heading into SXSW 2022. Ruth Lyon showcases on Saturday night at St. David’s Bethell Hall on a bill presented by Achord Agency. (Kevin McStravick)
