Sister Ray - “Crucified”

SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 1

Pairs Well With…Sharon Van Etten, Big Thief, Angel Olsen

While Sister Ray only has one song out so far, “Crucified” alone is enough of a statement to make her an artist to watch heading into SXSW. Bedroom folk, alt country, and some dream rock tones inhabit the emotive number, a track that builds over three minutes subtly, yet with impact. While sad and haunting, “Crucified” is also sonically dynamic, echoes of sound bouncing around the otherwise tones of alt-rock balladry. Balancing vulnerability and empowering vocal lines, it’s a song that sticks and builds excitement for Sister Ray’s upcoming record Communion. Sister Ray showcases on Friday night at Valhalla alongside other recommended Royal Mountain Records artists Pillow Queens, Cuffed Up, JayWood, and Gustaf. (Kevin McStravick)
