Bright and full psychedelic rock powers Slomo Drags, but rather than throwing back to 70s past-masters, the Austin band gives their guitar jams danceable, indie-pop drive. Funk and soul grooves dictate their rhythm section, letting math-rock eclecticism to play without losing a sense of song throughout. The band’s latest EP, 2022’s Twin Absorber, is also their best, a release that adds bounce and direction to what could otherwise be tripped-out adventurism. There’s charm in how Slomo Drags performs their songs, complex but not self-serious, a factor that makes their sweet melodies and deep jams that much more convincing.
