A Giant Dog - “Intervention” (Arcade Fire cover)

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7

Pairs Well With…Spoon, Sheer Mag, Of Montreal

Eclectic indie rock band A Giant Dog haven’t released new original music since 2017’s wild, spirited record Toy, but the Austin quintet did take on another’s music, covering Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible in full as part of Merge Record’s Born Under A Good Sign vinyl subscription series. It’s a logical fit for the energized, life-affirming sound that A Giant Dog has in common with their northern brethren and they kill it, not so much reinventing Neon Bible as adding their eclectic spark to the resonant, balanced record of chaos and beauty. (Kevin McStravick)

2019 Review: A Giant Dog’s music is concurrently weird and catchy, based in indie and punk rock/pop and performed with top-line passion and alt rock punch. Their latest record was 2017’s Toy, a mix of rambunctious power pop (“Photograph”), psych pop (“Get Away”) and cinematic rock (“Roller Coaster”), a diverse effort with core, relatable spirit. Imaginably they are working up some new tunes for SXSW for what would be record number five and it’s even more exciting charting the growth from their classic punk rock debut Fight into territory far-reaching from that punchy, energized starting point.
