Anna Shoemaker - “Funny"

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…Maggie Rogers, King Princess, Clairo

Anna Shoemaker has evolved from a quiet R&B balladeer to a full pop artist on “Funny”, a danceable track of hooks and rhythms coming from a dreamy, electronic pop space. It’s a welcome growth and not overdone, lushly produced and naturally energized. “If You’re Going (I’ll Go”), the other single released from Shoemaker’s upcoming EP Everything is Embarrassing,  acts as a nice bridge between the Brooklyn artist’s earlier minimal R&B material and a full pop sound, a pocket space groover that comes together in a funky and memorable chorus. 2019 Review: Emerging singer-songwriter Anna Shoemaker introduced herself last year with East Side, an EP of minimal R&B/pop ballads and bangers showcasing the NYC artist’s rich, textured vocals. Check the title track’s soaring, hooky melody, filled with real emotion, or “Too High”, a funky, rhythmic track that flirts with indie pop charm, to explore the range in Shoemaker’s early offerings. This balance is important as Shoemaker builds her career, equally able to hit big dance-pop melodies while still opening up like in one-on-one conversation.
