Emily Wolfe - “Ghost Limb Gambler”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 4
Pairs Well With…Grace Potter, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Courtney Barnett
After just a couple scattered singles since Emily Wolfe’s 2014 EP Roulette, the Austin alt rock artist finally released her debut full-length in 2019 and has already followed up with a pair of new tracks “Circles” and “Ghost Limb Gambler”. Wolfe continues to dig hard into stoner rock riffs to embolden her sound on the latter, but “Circles” presents a completely different side of the artist as an emotional, indie pop balladeer. She wears both sets of shoes well, always with a guitar-led focus to accompany Wolfe’s naturally soulful rock voice. (Kevin McStravick)
2016 Review: The rock is getting stronger with Emily Wolfe, adding extra reverb to her vocals and guitar for her riffed up take on blues rock on latest single “Atta Blues”. The song’s structure is traditional, but the electric, garage vibe and a few extra effects take it well beyond some of the folkier material of Wolfe’s earlier records. This one could jam out too, a perfect set closer for her growing rock and roll presence.
2015 Review: This fall, Emily Wolfe released yet another EP, the swirling, grungy Roulette, the Austin songwriter’s most electric effort to date. Even the lone ballad, “Marionette”, weaves in open jams to a bouncy, country-influenced vocal. The meat of Roulette lies with the ragged croon of psych-blues groover “Ghost Limb” and the basement-pop jam “Violent Veins”, embracing hints of 90s rock with a youthful vigor.
