Fenne Lily’s 2018 record On Hold is haunting and raw, a lonely acoustic folk record that’s quietly tense and sad. While whispered, Lily has an instinctual knack for effective little melodies, moving her music forward with pin-drop precision. It’s delicate and vulnerable, but avoids becoming boring with dynamic moments of chamber pop or choral harmonies interspersed throughout her minimalist catalog. “Car Park” even adds a bit of percussion, a hint of what Lily would sound like in a fuller band setting.
