Hachiku - “Shark Attack”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Mallrat, CHVRCHES, Maggie Rogers

Dreamy bedroom pop and psychedelic layering, Hachiku turns little, melodic songs into interesting soundscapes on her 2017 debut EP and more recent follow-up singles. “Shark Attack” is the latest, a creeping track of chillwave groove, finding ground between a pretty indie pop song and bubbling production giving Hachiku’s sound unexpected direction. The psych rock escapes throughout “Shark Attack” apply cinematic tension, unexpected given her subtle musical foundation. These elements are common moving back through Hachiku’s dream rock catalog, often spacing out in lieu of taking straightforward pop paths. “Zombie Slayer” is especially intriguing, a hypnotic track countering Eastern melodies, indie pop vocals, and some post rock layers with a smart puppet-master grip throughout the song’s tight three minutes. In a space that can be boring in the wrong hands, Hachiku’s music is constantly interesting and even more rewarding after multiple listens. (Kevin McStravick)
