Holly Macve - “Another Day”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 6
Pairs Well With…Margo Price, Amanda Shires, Nikki Lane
Beautifully voiced singer-songwriter Holly Macve released her debut full-length Golden Eagle since our last check-in for SXSW 2017 and recently followed up with “Another Day”, perhaps her most stunning ballad and one that really embraces the country croon within her sound. It feels like this song has been around for a hundred years, a crushing and simple melody that hearkens back to beginnings of Americana music. Ghostly slide guitars give “Another Day” a dreamy platform for Macve’s pitch-perfect vocal - have tissues on hand to get through these perfect four minutes of heart-wrenching music. 2017 Review: We were going off just a couple minutes of music with last year’s listen of Holly Macve, so it’s revelatory to hear her sound open up to alt country roots in recent single “No One Has the Answers”. Macve’s very strong songwriting provides a fertile field for her deep, textured vocal, one that can fit a country classic or modern ballad with detailed, bluesy precision. She seriously has one of the best voices on the whole SXSW lineup.
2016 Review: With just a bedroom recording available, Holly Macve is more an early prediction than an artist deeming a full review, but “The Corner of My Mind” is enough of an indication to place some sure bets on Macve finding an entranced audience in the near future. Accompanied by soft, acoustic finger-picking and enchanted harmonies, Macve croons with a sultry, complex tone on this introductory peek. There’s a tinge of country twang in her textural, deep voice, a unique instrument that achieves ghostly significance on “The Corner of My Mind”.
