Jeff Lofton - “Jericho"

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Dizzy Gillespie, Terence Blanchard, Chet Baker

I don’t have new music since Jeff Lofton’s debut full-length Jericho, but it’s always worth a stroll with the local saxophone mainstay. Lofton has a subtle, classic touch to his playing that is both traditional and exciting, getting the most out of each note with raw mastery and infection. He’s clearly a student of past masters and incorporates Miles and Dizzy type movement to his personal approach. (Kevin McStravick)

2015 Review: Jazz trumpeter and OEB favorite Jeff Lofton has been digging into originals in 2014, releasing “Compared to What” and “Nola Beat” off his upcoming record Jericho. Lofton is at the forefront of Austin jazz through his improvisational and emotional playing, recently taking Best Horn Player recognition from The Austin Chronicle.

2014 Review: OEB’s favorite Austin jazz artist returns to SXSW this year with a new record. Jericho is due in 2014 and is led by a collaboration with another local highlight, blues guitarist/vocalist Carolyn Wonderland. Lofton has such a gentle touch that his playing yields gut-punching emotionality, a lost trait on so many of his SXSW peers.
