Katy Kirby - “Peppermint”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Neko Case, Laura Veirs, Jenny Lewis

While Texas alt-country/pop artist Katy Kirby hasn’t released new music since 2018 three-song EP Juniper, she’s been touring those tracks and newer material through the last year, so expect SXSW 2020 to be a showcase for what’s next for the warm, sweetly nostalgic artist. Accessible and passionate, Kirby’s music is already well formed and tightly performed, a good sign for whatever is next from the consistently breezy, songwriting-focused artist. (Kevin McStravick)

2019 Review: Playing a form of breezy folk pop, Katy Kirby’s music is immediately accessible with warmth and familiarity seeping from her debut EP Juniper. It’s nice to hear the hopeful, positive tone in Kirby’s sound given how easily bedroom folk can spotlight heartbreak and yearning. The Texas singer-songwriter takes notes from Laurel Canyon, but ties them sweetly into a red-dirt influence that subtly powers tracks like “Tap Twice” and “Juniper”.
