Los Coast - “Monsters”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3
Pairs Well With…Seratones, Gov’t Mule, Marcus King Band
Austin duo Los Coast take influence from classic R&B, Southern rock, and funk on their debut full-length Samsara released just last year as the soulful band heads into the fifth consecutive SXSW. More throwback than experimental chillwave, Los Coast add a fine layer of psychedelic pop to their fully formed sound on Samsara, giving it some extra depth and unpredictability, truly allowed given the heartfelt anchor in Los Coasts’ vocals and songwriting. 2017 Review: Psychedelic funk band Los Coast released their debut singles in 2016, including the blues-based, R&B groover “Simplify”. The Austin band breaks out of wedding-band territory immediately by including extra sonic accompaniment beyond bass, guitar and drums. “Summer Samaritan” is in similar form, if not a little more straightforward, bright but gritty instead of going for an expected wall of sound.
2016 Review: Emerging funk band Los Coast play a slightly psychedelic R&B backing, a platform for their strongly voiced frontman to croon with rangy, emotional appeal. They have some live YouTube videos online and that’s it - here’s to something from the studio as we head towards SXSW.
