Max Frost - “Back In The Summer”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 9

Pairs Well With…Khalid, DNCE, Chromeo

It may be a few minutes early for a hot summer jam, but Max Frost isn’t holding back on the infectious new single “Back in the Summer”, an unapologetically nostalgic number infused with R&B, hip hop, and electronic pop forms. Fully formed and produced with texture and taste, Max Frost’s music has matured into one of hit-making prowess, full of soul, but Frost adds little dynamic twists to his music that feels wholly modern and radio ready. Above all, the Austin-based artist’s music is fun and danceable and the string of singles since 2018 Gold Rush are among the strongest in his catalog, a trend that could push Max Frost up on festival stage rosters once we kick live music back in gear. 2015 Review: Austin indie pop singer songwriter Max Frost has an eclectic style that incorporates elements from blues, rock, hip hop, and electronic music into a unique style that never bores. His 2013 EP Low High Low shows Max is both an excellent songwriter and musician. The album features the singles Nice and Slow and White Lies.

2014 Review: Austin’s Max Frost dropped the grooving electronic pop EP White Lies this year, showing a new side of the respected young, local artist.  A funk groove resides through a few of these tracks, a nice touch that presents Max Frost as much of an R&B artist as an electronic songwriter.  “Glow Long” takes a little bit of new wave pop to drive the rhythms forward only to be outdone by the glitchy blues of “Suspended Animation”.  The eclectic mix introduces the artist as a left-field experimenter, but all of these songs are pure pop at their heart and maintain accessibility through every hook and backbeat.
