Milky Chance - “Oh Mama”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 10
Pairs Well With…Alt-J, Flora Cash, Glass Animals
Milky Chance haven’t as much evolved their sound as they have taken it deeper on their third record Mind the Moon, leaning more into the percussive, electronic modes that give their music an almost tribal depth. There’s still an acoustic pop backbone with some sunny, hip-hop haziness here, but the Afropop vibes of “Fado” and dub punch on “The Game” show Milky Chance’s tight control over a wide genre vision. The German duo were set to headline the big Outdoor Stage at SXSW as part of a nationwide tour, but they’ve already rescheduled most dates for the fall and have been doing a StayHome Sessions series on their Facebook page impressively performing from four separate houses and blending together intimately and masterfully. 2015 Review: German electro-folk rock duo Milky Chance scored a viral YouTube hit with the super catchy single Stolen Dance. The single served as an introduction to the duo’s laid back full-length debut, 2014’s Sadnecessary. There’s a lot to dig into on the debut album, it was one of the best albums, and I can’t think of a better debut, from last year. If you’re singing along to Stolen Dance, make the leap and pick up the album. You won’t regret the purchase.
