Nané - “Always On My Mind”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 4

Pairs Well With…Alabama Shakes, Jamiroquai, Gary Clark Jr.

Nané's debut single “Always On My Mind” is an affirming explosion of soul, a mightily impressive start for the funkified Austin quintet. What begins as a snaking R&B number of throwback falsetto opens up into a full-throated chorus, pained screams of yearning passion amid a wave of guitars and horns. Psychedelic rock jams and even some whistling amend the smile-inducing track, a revelatory single that’s moving from all angles. Follow-up “This I Know” heads more into disco-funk territory, a space groove with twists of Western swing and a constant, propulsive drive. There’s studied precision to Nané’s performance as well, noticeably tight and recalling the sound of classic hits at moments before emerging into their own unique, sonic concoction. Nané’s music is not only exploratory, but it’s danceable and fun, an energized sound that surely translates even better on stage. Nané are teasing ‘something big’ called “Wolverine” due in early March, so keep an eye out for a new single or even a full record announce in the coming weeks from this exciting new group.
