ROOKIE - “I Can’t Have You But I Want You”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 9; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Delta Spirit, The Texas Gentlemen, Dr. Dog

ROOKIE’s self-titled LP feels like wax produced from a different era, steeped in 70s rock modes and produced with a rock and roll energy that hasn’t been felt for years. Built on spirited blues rock licks and garage atmosphere, ROOKIE’s debut is explosive and doesn’t quit, laying thick with riffs and memorable melodies track to track. The Chicago upstarts have been perfecting their songs over the past few years with a studied, classic rock vibe, but one that also finds a home in Americana and Southern rock forms that match the band’s ramblin’ approach. Their songwriting is really where ROOKIE is able to stand out, avoiding spaced out psychedelia for tight riffage and percussion, a band that sounds live on record and one that feels bigger than their parts especially given this is their full-length debut. ROOKIE’s record is one I keep going back to since its release in mid-March, capturing a warm and comforting sound that is timeless with rock and roll spirit and intention throughout.
