Sofia Talvik - “Siren Song”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5

Pairs Well With…First Aid Kit, The Staves, Kacey Musgraves

Fully returning to her Americana roots after some pop and electronic excursions, Sofia Talvik’s 2019 record Paws of a Bear carries weight from slide guitars borrowed from traditional country roots. Some light dream pop atmospherics impact a track like “Siren Song”, but Talvik’s sound is anchored by classic folk patterns and acoustic pop songwriting. It’s a consistently pretty and detailed record, one that highlights the Swedish artist’s sweet, natural vocal and is occasionally accompanied by grander chamber folk instrumentation. 2012 Review: Sofia Talvik is a Swedish singer-songwriter who has a great touch for exploring different sides of the pop spectrum.  On one hand, her music is based in simple folk forms.  You can hear her strumming along to minimal tunes throughout a few acoustic projects, but it is where Talvik takes it from there that makes her a special artist.  Like a more experimental Ellie Goulding, Talvik explores electronica, melodrama and country throughout her diverse catalog.  Over the past seven years of releasing records, she has only grown stronger.
