Strange Ranger - “Leona”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 3

Pairs Well With…Oso Oso, Built to Spill, Mac DeMarco

Strange Ranger’s sophomore album Remembering the Rockets is a full and contemplative indie rock record, exploring planes both breezy (“Leona”, “Sunday”) and spacious (“Message to You”, “Pete’s Hill”) across the ambitious effort. The Philadelphia-based quartet tend to gravitate towards comfortable shoe gaze pop regardless of their starting points, infusing their music with some alt country (“Ari Song”) and new wave tones (“Living Free”) with a free and courageous spirit. Strange Ranger’s ability to evolve classic indie rock into something new and broader is a testament to the band’s mature songwriting, a craft they’ve been honing successfully since 2016 debut EP Sunbeams Though Your Head.
