The Irons - “Goodbye Too Soon”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2

Pairs Well With…Washed Out, Mac DeMarco, Netherfriends

The Irons’ sophomore record Taking It All In is a breezy, chillwave trip, an album that takes sweet 60s-inspired pop and morphs it like a psychedelic spin cycle. Performed with a dreamy croon, The Irons’ music feels like a tape stretched out with a fine pull, loosening their sweet and sunny sounds with DIY ease. It’s modern melancholy with hidden pop hooks underneath, outright charming but with the sides sanded down. This distance gives The Irons’ music a slow sway, finding bits of indie folk and twee pop to emphasize the soft sonic smiles within the Austin band’s comfortably weird sound. (Kevin McStravick)
