Whitney Rose - “You Don’t Own Me”
SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 5
Pairs Well With…Kacey Musgraves, Kelly Willis, Patsy Cline
SXSW regular and local country troubadour Whitney Rose added a little bit of classic pop swing to her 2017 full-length Rule 62 and follow-up track “You Don’t Own Me”, achieving a breezy, personal sound rather than the more traditionally minded material of her earlier records. That said, Rule 62 is still a country album even when infused with R&B soul like highlight track “Can’t Stop Shakin’”, keeping a tight pocket throughout this heartfelt and accessible record. 2017 Review: Whitney Rose is set to release her third record South Texas Suite later this January and it is previewed by “My Boots”, a classic country song of empowerment and individuality. It’s consistent to what came before - Rose’s style works best when she’s in full-on throwback mode and just being herself to keep things current.
2016 Review: Classic country throwback Whitney Rose takes a familiar, traditional mode and uses it to show off vocal and songwriting chops on her sophomore record Heartbreaker of the Year. Crying slide guitars, chill percussion and electric/acoustic jump-offs ground the album, all coming courtesy of Rose’s temporary backing band The Mavericks. It’s quite a score and Rose steps up to the task, delivering smoky, studied vocals with notable, weathered confidence from the young performer.
