Wiki - “The Routine”

SXSW 2020 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 8

Pairs Well With…Denzel Curry, Your Old Droog, Ratking

Wiki has released two full-lengths since Brooklyn rap group Ratking went on hiatus five years back, the most recent being the adventurous, sludgy record OOFIE. Wiki has gotten more experimental in his genre moves, evolving from the punk-infused intensity of Ratking to sounds more introverted and psychedelic on OOFIE, finding a foundation that pulls from classic NYC hip hop as well as more eclectic, modern influences. Wiki adds his unique rap tone over these inventive beats, using a viscus, tenor timbre that has a natural sense of passion within. The chameleon-like rapper goes from stretched-out funk rhythms (“Way That I Am”) to jazz-infused trap melodies (“Grim”) to dreamy, new-wave synth action on highlight “Downfall” on the constantly refreshing record. Even though Wiki’s psych-rap beats and directions stand out musically, he’s smart to put his lyrics and flow on top, turning up his vocals in the mix to not forget about the roots of his studied rap forms. Wiki has put himself out front during quarantine as well, already performing sets for Fader Fort and Boiler Room from his makeshift home studio since going on lockdown last month. (Kevin McStravick)
