William Doyle’s 2019 full-length Your Wilderness Revisited drops his previous East India Youth moniker, but keeps many of the same grand, experimental threads of his early career. Ambience and orchestral swells intersect in his detailed organic/electronic-blended music, tripping out extensively but maintaining a rootsy anchor of dreamy Americana reflections. 60s pop and psychedelic rock threads also play key roles on Your Wilderness Revisited, a warm record even surrounded by Doyle’s textured and creative song craft. 2015 Review: It’s difficult to figure out from where East India Youth’s music originates. Trance House? New Wave pop? Orchestral post rock? All of these elements take major turns on East India Youth’s ambitious debut Total Strife Forever, one of the earlier highlight releases of 2014. The British electronic musician has a flair for dramatics and builds, both of which he uses to construct Total Strife Forever as a full, contiguous album. It’s a fearless performance, playing out ideas for minutes on end in both harmony and dissonance. In its tripped out moments, East India Youth takes on a 70s Floyd vibe, but then will transform songs like “Hinterland” and “Heaven, How Long” into shaded dance club territory.
