The Bots - “Girl Problems”
SXSW 2022 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 7
Pairs Well With…Thee Oh Sees, Mac DeMarco, Black Pumas
Psych rock duo The Bots followed up their buzzy 2014 debut Pink Palms last year with 2 Seater, a record that clearly shows the psych rock band’s evolution through the past seven years. Now more post-punk than deep blues-driven rock, the brothers Lei are able to explore track to track while still pulling out power pop bursts for a catchy hook or two. “Girl Problems” grooves with sunny, fuzzy melodies, “DYKMN” incorporates math-rock type movement, while “Easy Said” harkens back to 60s and 70s pop-oriented rock. 2 Seater is an excellent example of what can happen when a band really takes their time with their songwriting to produce a truly unique contribution to the psych rock catalog.
