The Golden Dregs - “Before We Fell From Grace”
SXSW 2023 - OEB Score: 8; Popularity Index: 2
Pairs Well With…The National, Tom Waits, Okkervil River
The voice of Benjamin Woods, the solo artist behind The Golden Dregs, is immediately entrancing. A low baritone, Woods’ tone is naturally rich, each note sung with gritted texture. It’s an instrument that matches the mix of folk rock, ambience, and cinematic builds that make up the music of The Golden Dregs’ upcoming record On Grace & Dignity. The album is the English artist’s third full-length and is already previewed by a trio of tracks that run from the funky horn groover “Sundown Lake” and “American Airlines”, a song that is equally built on tension and comfort. The latest is “Before We Fell From Grace”, the quietest of the three and the most impactful. Echoing keyboard and organ sounds swirl underneath the single, letting the vocals really stand out with heartbreaking vulnerability. On Grace & Dignity comes out this February and could prove to be the one that connects wider for this underrated performer. (Kevin McStravick)
