The Wandering Hearts – “On Our Way”

SXSW 2023 – OEB Score 7, Popularity Index 7

Pairs well with . . .  The Mamas & the Papas, First Aid Kit, Fleetwood Mac

After the pandemic cancelled their expected 2020 SXSW debut, The Wandering Hearts will finally cross the Pond to bring their blend of 60/70 soft rock harmonies to Austin. While the Wandering Hearts can veer a wee bit close to an easy listening sound, what save their music for OEB is the production and polish that transform what could be precious throwback folk in modern buoyant anthems, even when subject matter is heartbreak or loss.

Expect to hear a lot off their 2022, The Wandering Hearts (Deluxe), which gathers several years’ worth of EPs and singles, most which feature their trademark harmonies and majestic melodies. “On Our Way,” a song of solidarity and overcoming difficulty, is a good place to start.  Its simple message is “to carry on” and so “be on our way.” Piano, guitar, and drums all do their part in building a classic pop anthem. “Gold” has similar anthemic qualities but uses guy/girl harmonies and tribal percussive beats for the builds. The first song on the album, “Hammer Falls, is a moodier blend of blues and twang. And while they have released a lot of music since 2019, the song featured in our 2020 review, “Devil,” is still their biggest hit, suggesting that a showcase set might end with this power pop country banger.
