Theodore’s The Voyage, his latest arriving four years after his last album Inner Dynamics, is an exercise in dynamics, moving from sparse quietude to epic grandness over the course of six multifaceted tracks. It’s a rock record, but the melodrama gives off the vibe of tense Broadway scene, visceral in a sense, constantly building while moving section to section. It’s a complex, instrumentally emotive sound that draws more to post-rock than alt-rock and is a moving experience from the ambitious Greek artist. Theodore’s official showcase is scheduled for Tuesday night at Shangri-La alongside fellow recommend act Somebody’s Child. (Kevin McStravick)
2019 Review: Dark, spaced out soundscapes enhance Theodore’s 2018 record Inner Dynamics, moving his sound from pacing indie rock to dramatic, dense creations minute by minute. Theodore’s textured baritone instantly adds depth to the music underneath, soaring complex melodies in ways both arresting and disarming. I caught Theodore live at SXSW 2018 and even during a sunny afternoon, his band’s all-black vibes set a distinct mood that translated intently.
